Connecting to our IRC channel with GAIM

First of course you must get gaim here

When you first load Gaim, you are presented with the AIM Login dialog:

However, you will be using it for IRC, so you will need to set it up for that instead – to do this, you will need to open the Account Editor window by clicking the Accounts button (CTRL+A).

The next step is to create a new account in Gaim, for IRC, so click the Add button. You will see the Add Account window:

First you must click IRC, then you will fill out your details:

Here, you fill out your account details. Under screenname, enter your chosen IRC nick. Then, under IRC Options, enter the server name, irc.mzima.net. Skip Password and Local Alias, then click Save.



Connecting

You can now connect to IRC, by checking Enabled for the account.



Joining a Chat


You will now see a Buddy List window on the screen; this is primarily for the instant messaging facilities of Gaim, but you also need to use it for IRC. To join an IRC channel, select Join A Chat (CTRL+C) from the File menu of the Buddy List – the Join Chat dialog will appear:

Enter in the channel name to join (#dchaven), ignoring the password box. Click Join. A tabbed conversations window will now appear, with a tab for #dchaven:

You also have the option of Auto-Joining #dchaven each time you open Gaim.
to do this just right click on #dchaven in the Buddy list and choose Auto-Join
